Message from the Principal

Good afternoon, CFHS families! We have received questions regarding changes to the sign-out policy, so I wanted to take a moment to share more about the issue the policy is addressing and clarify how the changes have been implemented. A copy of the CFHS Handbook Hot Sheet 2023-24 covers all updates to the student handbook and is available here, as well as in the CFHS front office.
First, we modified the sign-out policy to address an issue that arose last year of students having parents/guardians call to sign them out during lunch and remain absent through Cardinal Academy, and sometimes part of fifth period. We have a closed campus during the school day to ensure student safety, and we want every student at school and in classes learning every day.
Next, telephone check-outs may occur in the following circumstances:
When a parent/guardian sends a note that a student needs to check out for an appointment during the day, we will call the parent/guardian to allow the student to sign-out at the appropriate time. Students must provide documentation of the appointment to CFHS within three (3) school days after the appointment.
When the CFHS nurse or an administrator has determined that a student is ill or unwell and needs to go home, we will call the parent/guardian to allow the student to sign-out. Generally, ill students will be able to drive themselves home, but in some instances the nurse or an administrator may determine that it’s safer for a parent/guardian to come get their child. In those cases, the student will remain under the care of the nurse until they are picked up. If your student contacts you during the day because they feel sick, please tell them to let their teacher know they need to see the nurse.
When an administrator has determined that a student needs to go home, we will call the parent/guardian to allow the student to sign-out.
If a situation arises during the day and your student needs to check-out, please call the school and ask to speak with me. We understand that life happens, and telephone check-outs will be allowed at the administration’s discretion. However, if this becomes a recurring issue, a meeting with administrators will be scheduled to discuss ways we can support your family and ensure your student is attending all classes regularly.
Regular attendance at school increases the likelihood that students will graduate high school and college. It also prepares our students for the workforce and to be productive members of society. We appreciate your support as we work to reinforce to students the importance of being where they’re supposed to be, being on time, and doing the right thing.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I am here to support the students, staff, and families of CFHS as we all work together to help every student succeed.
Sincerely,
Cara Bowie
CFHS Principal
